In 2003 the Iyenga Agricultural Cooperative Society (AMCS) established itself in the Mbeya region of Tanzania. Iyenga AMCS started as a modest group of 64 male farmers and is now composed of 193 individuals, including 17 women. Through democratic elections they have formed a strong leadership board with an emphasis on ensuring every farmer is heard and has the opportunity to participate. As a cooperative, they support women and young people in their participation in coffee agricultural activities and consult with the Tanzanian Coffee Research Institute to decide what varieties to plant and how to help them thrive.

Each farm that contributes coffee to the Iyenga washing station is no more than 5 hectares, but together Iyenga ACMS produces 80 tonnes of parchment annually. All the coffee cherries are hand picked and sorted before pulping at the cooperative’s mill - as close as 300 meters away for the nearest farmer, 10 kilometers for the furthest.

Picking coffee at its peak ripeness is pivotal for the success of the final product. Iyenga employs extra help during the harvest season, including a fleet of drivers and motorcyclists that aid in the timely harvest and transport as well as secretaries to help arrange harvest logistics. All coffee cherries are delivered to the mill and pulped within 8 hours of being picked.

This coffee is a mix of home and mill pulped coffees that have been meticulously sorted and scored. It highlights all of the things that excite us most about Tanzania - clean crisp coffees with sparkling tropical acidity. The AA/AB distinction refers to the screen size, the largest beans produced of the season. While the size of the bean is not necessarily an indicator of quality, it is incredibly important to ensure even drying and roasting of the final product.
