The Kianamui Factory was established in 1963, on the flowing slopes of Mount Kenya. This location processes coffee for around 2000 members, 1200 of whom are men and 800 of whom are women. These producers are very small, with an average of only 200 trees. With ideal conditions for coffee growing, farmers here benefit from the mineral-rich, red volcanic loam soils and an altitude of 1650 meters above sea level. The coffee is handpicked and delivered to the wet mill for pulping.

Most coffee producers in Kenya are “smallholders”. Each producer’s total volume might only be a few bags, thus hundreds of farmers, when living in the same area, are likely to be members of a cooperative, which markets and sells coffee on the whole community’s behalf. Each cooperative typically runs several “factories” (i.e. processing and washing stations) where producers deliver cherries from their farms.

This is the first year we have tasted coffee produced by the Kianamui factory. When we sampled this lot, we were immediately drawn to the classically intense Kenya flavors of cranberry and grapefruit balanced by a sugary sweet depth that reminds us of turbinado sugar.
